IPN student tried for AI-manipulated intimate images of eight classmates
An IPN student faces trial for allegedly using AI to create and distribute manipulated intimate images of at least 1,000 women, including eight classmates. The case is positioned as potentially the first conviction globally for AI-enabled digital sexual violence.
What happened
Diego 'N', an IPN student, was arrested in October 2023 and charged with human trafficking in the form of child sexual abuse material after authorities found a digital tablet containing intimate photographs and manipulated images of approximately 1,000 women aged 17 to 25.
The tablet contained 166,000 AI-modified images and 20,000 pornographic videos distributed without consent. Eight of his classmates filed complaints alleging he altered their photographs for sexual exploitation purposes.
Reported impact
One of the complainants stated that the legal battle has significantly changed her life in many ways. She indicated that the case involves eight separate complaints, with two currently in trial and six more pending.
Governance controls
The students and activists received legal support under Mexico's Ley Olimpia, legislation enacted to sanction digital violence. Activist Olimpia Coral Melo, the law's proponent, supported the complainants throughout the process.
