iPhone 11 Face ID unlocked by unregistered sibling in Turkey
Two sisters in Turkey reported that an iPhone 11's Face ID system unlocked for the older sister despite her not being registered on the device, granting access to protected applications and data. Apple attempted a remote update but the problem recurred.
What happened
A 17-year-old named İrem Kasap living in Kemalpaşa district of Artvin, Turkey reported that her iPhone 11 could be unlocked via Face ID by her 28-year-old sister Emel Kantar, despite an 11-year age difference between them.
The sisters tested the feature multiple times and confirmed it repeatedly unlocked the phone using Emel's face. After contacting Apple, the device received a remote update and various adjustments, but the issue recurred within a few days.
Reported impact
Emel Kantar stated she could access all applications and data protected by Face ID on the phone. The sisters expressed concern about a serious security flaw and indicated they would file formal complaints.
Governance controls
Apple performed a remote update on the device and made various settings adjustments in response to the reported issue, but the problem reappeared shortly afterward.
