What happened

In early 2023, Eric Vaughan, CEO of IgniteTech, a business software company specializing in AI, launched a large-scale training and investment programme called 'AI Monday' across all departments including sales, marketing and development, with the company investing approximately 20% of its revenue.

Significant resistance emerged from staff, particularly from technical staff and some who refused to use AI tools or sabotaged use of the new tools. In response, Vaughan fired approximately 80% of the workforce in 2023 because they were not fast and willing enough to adopt extensive AI use.

When asked if he would make the same decision again, Vaughan stated 'Without hesitation', explaining that 'You cannot force anyone to change, especially if they don't believe in it' and characterizing it as 'not about technical change. It is a change of culture and a business change.'

Reported impact

Hundreds of employees were forced to depart the organization as a result of refusing to adopt AI tools or resisting the AI implementation programme.

Governance controls

Vaughan acknowledged the decision was 'extremely difficult' and stated that the real objective was not to fire employees, but that he could not force people to change their views on AI adoption.
