Helsinki Newspaper Published AI-Generated Fake Interviews
A Helsinki newspaper published at least two street interviews created with AI, featuring fabricated people and text, before the deception was discovered by another outlet. The newspaper's editor apologized and terminated the assistant responsible.
What happened
Lauttasaari-lehti, a Helsinki newspaper, published at least two street interview articles that were created using AI, with fabricated text and images of people who did not exist.
The same assistant created both AI-generated articles. Helsingin Sanomat reported the first fake interview on Monday, and the newspaper disclosed a second one shortly after.
Reported impact
The newspaper's most recent print edition went to press before the fabricated interviews were discovered, resulting in the second fake interview being distributed in print.
Governance controls
Editor-in-Chief Petri Suhonen apologized for the incident and stated he takes responsibility for the error despite reviewing all articles before publication. The assistant relationship was terminated immediately after the first article was discovered.
The newspaper stated it would implement more careful verification of content submitted by contributors in the future.
