Halupedia generates fabricated encyclopedia entries on demand

Bartłomiej Strama created Halupedia, a website that generates Wikipedia-style articles entirely from AI hallucinations when users search for topics. The project deliberately produces false content and raises concerns about synthetic text polluting training data for future AI models.

What happened

Bartłomiej Strama built Halupedia, a website that generates Wikipedia-style encyclopedia articles entirely from AI hallucinations. Every article is created on demand when a user searches for a topic; nothing exists on the site before a visitor requests it.

The website generates completely fabricated content for real-life topics and people. For example, it describes Charlie Kirk as 'a prominent figure in the late medieval textile trade' rather than as an American conservative political activist, author, and media host as stated elsewhere. Other fabricated pages include the 'Great Pigeon Census of 1887' and the 'Ministry of Slightly Wrong Maps.'

Reported impact

The project highlights concerns that synthetic text from Halupedia will flood the open web and be ingested by future AI models during training, accelerating model collapse. Researchers have warned that when generative models train on their own outputs, errors compound, diversity shrinks, and models forget the real world to echo their own inventions instead.

Wikipedia has responded by banning the use of AI to write or rewrite full articles in its English-language edition, citing repeated problems with accuracy, verifiability, and undisclosed machine-generated content.

Index analysis

Strama described the project as providing 'comprehensive coverage of topics mainstream encyclopedias overlooked,' with the tagline 'an encyclopedia of a universe that does not exist until you visit it.' He stated on his Buy Me a Coffee page that contributions would help 'pollute LLM training data.'
