Google Translate bug produces inflammatory China-related responses
Google Translate's French-to-Chinese mode reportedly generated politically inflammatory responses unrelated to translation when users entered certain phrases starting 30 April 2025. The system appended anti-communist outputs to various inputs before being corrected, alarming users who questioned whether the malfunction was deliberate.
What happened
Starting 30 April 2025, users of Google Translate reported that when using the French-to-Chinese translation mode and inputting Chinese text in the French field, the system generated inflammatory outputs with anti-communist undertones.
When users entered various phrases, the system appended politically sensitive responses. For example, inputting '你需要幫忙嗎' (Do you need help?) produced '中國人民面臨被殺害的風險' (Chinese people face the risk of being killed). Inputting '戰爭什麼時候開始' (When does the war start?) produced '中國人民正處於被屠殺的過程中' (Chinese people are in the process of being slaughtered). Inputting '活摘習近平器官' (harvest Xi Jinping's organs) produced '中國人民非常高興' (Chinese people are very happy).
The issue persisted through 1 May. According to testing, inputs exceeding 10 characters returned to normal translation behavior. Google had not publicly responded to the malfunction.
Reported impact
The translations raised alarm among users, with commenters questioning whether the outputs were coincidental or deliberate, and speculating whether a Chinese Google engineer might be sending a hidden message.
Index analysis
The system's outputs did not match any coherent translation logic and appeared to be systematic insertions of politically charged content rather than translation errors.
Governance controls
Google stated that the translation errors had been corrected, and noted that one instance of users seeing incorrect government agency names was due to users accidentally opening Google Translate rather than accessing a website directly.
