Google Maps Navigation Error Leads to Fatal Accident in Rajasthan
Google Maps allegedly routed a family van onto a closed bridge over the Banas River in Rajasthan, India, resulting in the vehicle being swept away and four people drowning. Police confirmed the bridge had been closed for several months due to river flooding.
What happened
A family returning from a religious trip to Bhilwara was driving a van on Tuesday when the driver relied on Google Maps for directions and was routed onto the Somi-Upreda Bridge, which had been closed for several months due to flooding of the Banas River.
As the van entered the bridge, it became stuck and was swept away by the strong currents of the river. Five people managed to climb onto the roof of the van and were rescued by police; however, two women and two children were swept away by the currents.
Reported impact
Three people were killed: Chanda (21), her daughter Rutvi (6), and Mamta (25) and her daughter Khushi (4). The bodies of two women and a child were recovered; search efforts for another child were ongoing.
