Google Maps misdirection leads to car theft in wheat field

A driver in India followed Google Maps directions that led his car into a wheat field near Saharanpur on February 5, 2025. While stranded, thieves posing as helpers stole the vehicle after extracting it from the field, though police recovered it nearby the next day. What happened

On February 5, 2025, Firoz from Meerut was traveling with companion Nausad by car to Shamli. Firoz's acquaintance Liyakat sent him a location via Google Maps to navigate to Shamli-Karnal Chowk on Saharanpur Road.

Following Google Maps directions, Firoz took a wrong route and became lost. While attempting to reverse the car to return to the highway near Jadauda Jatt village, the vehicle became stuck in a wheat field.

After spending considerable time stuck, Firoz and Nausad flagged down two motorcycle riders for help around 2 a.m. The riders called three accomplices to assist. Once the car was extracted from the field, one youth sat in the driver's seat and drove away with the vehicle, while the other accomplices fled on motorcycles.

Firoz called police on the emergency number 112 to report the theft. Saharanpur Police recovered the car approximately 300 meters from the incident location the following morning and registered a case against three unidentified individuals.

Reported impact

Firoz lost his car, which was stolen by the individuals who ostensibly came to help extract it from the field.

Firoz was initially held in police custody and questioned, with authorities initially treating the matter as suspicious rather than a clear theft case. A farmer organization protest was staged to secure his release.

Index analysis

Google Maps provided incorrect location information that led the driver off the intended route into agricultural land, creating a vulnerability that thieves exploited. The misdirection made the vehicle stuck and defenseless in an isolated area.

Police initially suggested the incident might involve vehicle finance fraud rather than robbery, citing inconsistencies in Firoz's account and the quick recovery of the car near the scene.
