GM Recalls 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV for Adaptive Cruise Control Brake Failure

General Motors recalled approximately 2,890 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV all-wheel drive vehicles in the US due to a software defect in the adaptive cruise control system that may prevent the brakes from engaging when hazards are detected. Transport Canada separately recalled 5,599 vehicles. GM began distributing corrected software in December 2024.

What happened

General Motors issued a recall for certain 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV all-wheel drive models due to incorrect brake module software. According to the NHTSA's campaign number 25V012000, approximately 2,890 all-wheel drive models not equipped with GM Super Cruise were affected. Transport Canada issued a separate recall number 2025-014, affecting 5,599 Equinox EVs in Canada.

The adaptive cruise control system may fail to engage the brakes as expected when activated. The system correctly detects the need to apply brakes but a software problem prevents the brakes from being activated. GM began producing vehicles with corrected software in early December, and unsold vehicles are being updated remotely while sold vehicles will be updated at dealerships.

Reported impact

When the ACC is activated, vehicles may not slow down or stop if the system detects a need to apply brakes, creating a collision hazard. Front-wheel drive versions and all-wheel drive models equipped with Super Cruise were not affected by this issue.

Index analysis

The failure was traced to incorrect calibration in the brake module software that prevented proper communication between the ACC system's hazard detection and the vehicle's braking system.

Governance controls

NHTSA identified and publicly disclosed the recall. Transport Canada issued a parallel recall with a higher affected vehicle count, suggesting coordinated regulatory response across North America.
