French MP shares AI-generated fake image of Maduro's wife
A French Member of Parliament posted an AI-generated fake image of Nicolás Maduro's wife on social media while defending her against alleged U.S. violence, spreading misinformation that was flagged by community notes before the post was deleted.
What happened
On 6 January 2026, Sophia Chikirou, a French member of parliament and candidate for mayor of Paris, published a post on X (formerly Twitter) containing an image purporting to show Cilia Florès, wife of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, with a swollen face, black eye, and bandages on her forehead.
The image was flagged by X's community notes as likely AI-generated. The image differed from authenticated photographs: Cilia Florès appeared in court with blonde hair in the shared image but brown hair in real photographs from Time and Fox News, and the bandage placement was inconsistent with her actual court appearance showing bandages in different locations.
Chikirou's post accompanied the image with text defending Florès against what she described as violence by American forces and positioning her as representative of women victimized by imperialist wars. Chikirou subsequently deleted the post.
Reported impact
The image spread as the primary visual circulating from Cilia Florès's court appearance, with most other media coverage relying on official court drawings rather than photographs.
Index analysis
The AI-generated image contained visual inconsistencies characteristic of synthetic media, including misplaced bandages within hair and incorrect hair coloring that contradicted authenticated photographs from established news outlets.
