What happened

Starting January 7, 2025, several social media users shared AI-generated videos claiming to show a meeting between Maryam Nawaz and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The Federal Investigation Agency's Cyber Crime Wing registered cases after identifying accounts uploading the fake videos and images, which created negative impressions on social media.

The FIA arrested three individuals for creating and spreading the synthetic media. A Joint Investigation Team led by Additional Director Chaudhry Sarfraz, including officials from Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, and Lahore, conducted cyber patrols and investigated social media accounts. The investigation began following a source report identifying the accounts responsible for the fabricated visuals.

Reported impact

The AI-generated videos showed Maryam Nawaz 'hugging' the UAE President and circulated through multiple social media accounts. I-Verify Pakistan investigated the videos and confirmed they were fabricated using AI technology.

Index analysis

The FIA identified between 10 and 20 social media accounts through which the fake images and videos were circulated. Authorities indicated the investigation was part of a wider campaign to address the misuse of artificial intelligence for malicious purposes.

Governance controls

The FIA formed a Joint Investigation Team to coordinate the investigation across multiple cities. The FIA assured that efforts to scrutinize the identified accounts are ongoing and pledged to hold those responsible accountable.
