What happened

A family from Dadi area of Gautam Buddh Nagar was traveling to Meerth when they encountered traffic on the flyover. Following Google Maps directions for an alternate route, the driver in Preet Vihar area of Hapur followed the route which led the car directly into a four-foot-deep drainage channel.

The car's doors locked automatically upon impact, trapping all five occupants inside: Mohammad Ishan (driver), his wife Guddi, brother Sadik, and two children Reshu and Tahir. The occupants broke the car windows attempting to escape but were unable to exit.

Reported impact

Police and fire brigade teams received a distress call and arrived at the scene. The rescue operation took approximately two hours, after which all five people were safely extracted from the drain.

No fatalities were recorded. All occupants received initial medical treatment and were later sent back to Dadi. Police appealed to vehicle drivers to not rely solely on digital maps when traveling unfamiliar routes.

Index analysis

Google Maps directed a vehicle onto what appeared to be a navigable route but was actually an open drainage channel, demonstrating a potential gap in map data verification or real-world validation.

Governance controls

Police officials advised drivers to seek local information about routes in addition to relying on navigation applications to prevent similar incidents.
