Deezer reports 28% of uploaded music is fully AI-generated
Deezer reported that 28% of music uploaded to its platform is fully AI-generated, with 30,000 such tracks added daily and 70% of their plays detected as fraudulent. The French streaming service removes this content from algorithmic recommendations and has implemented AI detection and tagging systems to minimize impact on artists and the royalty pool.
What happened
Deezer revealed that 28 per cent of music uploaded to the platform is fully AI-generated, according to data from an AI-detection tool installed at the beginning of the year. The platform receives over 30,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, up from 10,000 in January and 20,000 in April.
Deezer detected that 70% of plays of these fully AI-generated songs have been identified as fraudulent. The platform removes fully AI-generated content from algorithmic recommendations and excludes it from editorial playlists.
Reported impact
Although fully AI-generated music accounts for only around 0.5% of all streams on Deezer, the platform believes the primary purpose of uploading these tracks is fraudulent activity. Deezer filters fraudulent streams out of royalty payments to minimize impact on the royalty pool.
Index analysis
Deezer's AI-detection system can detect 100% AI-generated music from popular models including Suno and Udio, both of which are facing copyright lawsuits from major music companies. The company claims to be the only streaming provider to tag 100% AI-generated content and exclude it from recommendations.
Governance controls
Deezer committed in June to labelling any song that uses AI with a tag and rolled out its AI tagging system to clearly display to users which albums include fully AI-generated tracks. The platform removes fully AI-generated content from algorithmic recommendations and does not include it in editorial playlists.
