Deepfake Video of Brazilian First Lady Spreads Misinformation on TikTok
An AI-generated deepfake video posted on TikTok falsely depicted Brazil's First Lady Janja da Silva boasting about spending public money on luxury purchases and misusing government aircraft. Fact-checkers found no evidence supporting the claims, noting the video blended false scenarios with references to an actual aircraft incident from which misleading conclusions were drawn.
What happened
A video posted on TikTok presents a satirical figure created by artificial intelligence that simulates Janja da Silva, the First Lady of Brazil, narrating in a mocking tone supposed excessive spending and financial privileges funded by public taxes.
The video references Janja's March 2025 trip to France for the N4G Nutrition for Growth Summit, falsely claiming she made million-dollar luxury purchases with public money and used unrestricted access to Brazilian Air Force aircraft, despite the actual trip costing R$ 60,210.58 according to the Transparency Portal.
Reported impact
The satirical content with clear indicators of AI generation was nonetheless interpreted as real by part of the public, spreading misinformation about the First Lady's use of public funds.
Index analysis
There is no evidence that the First Lady made million-dollar purchases with public money during her trip to France, as the video suggests.
The video references an actual incident where Janja traveled on a Brazilian Air Force aircraft to a gynecological consultation in SΓ£o Paulo, but omits that she was a passenger with Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes and his wife, with no additional costs to the Union as Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski requested the aircraft.
