Deepfake nude images of young adults investigated in Silleda, Spain

What happened

Twelve young adults from Silleda, Pontevedra reported the distribution of false nude images created with artificial intelligence. The victims, aged 20 to 30, belong to the same friendship group and discovered the synthetic images spread via digital channels and a shared WhatsApp group. According to initial analysis, the photographs were altered using the deepfake method.

Reported impact

The case became known on a Monday when seven complaints were initially filed, followed by an eighth the next day, and reached twelve by the morning of 10 June 2026. The Guardia Civil indicated that the number of complaints was expected to increase as the investigation continued and further victims came forward.

The investigation is being handled by the Telematic Crimes Team of the Pontevedra Comandancia. At the time of reporting, the Guardia Civil stated that no author or authors had been identified.

Spain's Council of Ministers approved on 26 May a law project on the proper use and governance of artificial intelligence that establishes a penalty regime for malicious use of AI technologies, with potential fines up to 35 million euros. The law differentiates multiple levels of violations with sanctions ranging from 6,000 euros for the most minor cases to 35 million euros for the most serious, including non-consensual intimate images.
