Cybersecurity Expert Warns of Roomba Privacy and Data Collection
A cybersecurity expert reportedly warned in social media videos that Roomba robotic vacuums collect and transmit extensive personal data from homes, including photographs and video footage sent to third parties for AI training, and shared a case where a woman was photographed in a bathroom and the image was leaked online.
What happened
Cybersecurity expert Marรญa Aperador posted videos on TikTok warning about data collection practices of Roomba robotic vacuums, stating that the devices create maps of homes, record WiFi network names, and capture images and video footage.
According to Aperador's investigation, images and videos collected by the vacuums are sent to third parties for processing to train artificial intelligence models, and photographs can capture people in sensitive or compromising situations, including children.
Aperador referenced a case where a woman was photographed in a bathroom by a Roomba, and the image was subsequently leaked on the internet.
Reported impact
The expert warned that collected data could reveal children's identities and expose compromising images, raising concerns about household privacy and vulnerability of intimate moments.
Aperador stated that information collected includes WiFi network names, home location data, cleaning schedule patterns, battery usage, completed areas, and customer identification for virtual assistance.
