Congress alleges AI-generated images used in Khandwa water award submission
The Madhya Pradesh Congress accused the Khandwa district administration of submitting AI-generated images to secure a national water conservation award, claiming officials fabricated development work photos. The district administration denied the allegations, stating that verified images underwent ministry scrutiny and field inspections.
What happened
Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari alleged that the Khandwa district administration used AI-generated images in the submission for a national water conservation award under the Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari campaign.
Patwari claimed that officials turned shallow pits into wells using AI and uploaded AI-generated images of development works to the official portal, which were used to secure the award.
Reported impact
The Khandwa district secured first place at the national level and received a βΉ2-crore award at the sixth National Water Awards ceremony held in New Delhi in November. The Kaveshwar gram panchayat also won second prize in the best gram panchayat category.
Index analysis
The Congress alleged that the submission misrepresented development work through synthetic images rather than genuine on-ground water conservation efforts, constituting a form of fraud in a government awards process.
Governance controls
The Khandwa district panchayat chief executive officer stated that verified images underwent thorough scrutiny before upload to the official Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari portal.
The Union jal shakti ministry verified all uploaded material and conducted random field inspections of one per cent of the total 1,29,046 water conservation works.
