Claude conversations and artifacts indexed in Google search results
Claude conversations and artifacts shared by users became indexable through Google Search, exposing hundreds of publicly shared chats that contained personal information, work details, and proprietary research. Anthropic removed the search availability over the weekend after users discovered the issue on Reddit.
What happened
Users discovered that Claude conversations and artifacts that had been shared with public links were being indexed by Google Search, making them discoverable through search queries. Hundreds of conversations across at least 25 pages of search results became accessible, some containing personal and work information including CVs, contact details, unpublished blog posts about corporate projects, and healthcare research.
The share feature within Claude indicates that "anyone with the link" may view shared content but does not explicitly state that links may appear in search engine results. Anthropic stated it does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines, and that shareable links are "not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves."
Reported impact
Users shared conversations containing sensitive information including names, contact details, work history, unpublished corporate documents about cloud security, healthcare research transcripts, and business plans. Some users had conducted what appeared to be proprietary research for their employers without apparent awareness their conversations would be discoverable through Google Search.
Index analysis
The conversations became searchable after being shared on public forums such as Reddit where search engines could index them. Anthropic stated that indexed chats and artifacts are only searchable on third-party search engines "after they've been shared somewhere a search engine can see --- such as a discussion forum or social media."
Governance controls
The search availability of the chat logs was removed over the weekend after users discovered the issue on Reddit. Anthropic stated that Claude users maintain control over whether and when to share conversations with the chatbot.
