Brazilian Government Orders Google to Remove AI-Generated Deepfake Nude Sites
Brazil's Attorney General ordered Google to remove from search results websites that use AI to generate fake sexual images of real people, citing a study showing disproportionate harm to women and children. The order, issued on 1 April 2026, gives Google five days to comply.
What happened
The AGU (Advocacia-Geral da União), Brazil's federal attorney general office, sent a non-judicial notice to Google on 1 April 2026 requesting removal from search results of websites using artificial intelligence to generate fake sexual images of real people.
The request requires compliance within five days and is based on a February 2026 study by Fundação Getulio Vargas law school documenting growth in searches for 'nudification' programs since mid-2023. The study identified sites that host, promote or facilitate access to AI nudification tools, noting they also produce child sexual abuse material.
Reported impact
Women, children and adolescents are affected disproportionately by these tools, according to the study. The research concludes that Google's indexing of these sites exponentially amplifies the reach of abuse technologies.
The study states that platform deindexation is technically viable and legally justified under Brazilian law and international human rights standards, and that platform inaction perpetuates cycles of disproportionate victimization of women and children.
Index analysis
The study, signed by Yasmin Curzi, José Nunes, Yasmin dos Santos and Walter Gaspar, argues that Google bears responsibility not to amplify tools of violence. The analysis noted growth in searches using terms like 'nudify' on Google by Brazilian users.
Governance controls
Google responded that it does not intend to comment on the AGU measure but stated it 'works constantly to develop new protections in search that help people affected by this type of content, evolving existing platform policies.' The AGU issued the order through its PNDD (Procuradoria Nacional da União de Defesa da Democracia).
