What happened
On 5 April 2025, a BMW sedan with license plate P-805-INI plunged from the end of the unfinished Krian–Gresik toll road in East Java, Indonesia. The 62-year-old driver, M Rudie Heru Komandono, was reportedly following directions from Google Maps when he drove into the unfinished toll section.
Although concrete barriers were installed to prevent vehicles from entering the unconnected toll road, there was a gap that could fit one vehicle. The driver breached this gap, requiring a 90-degree turn, before the vehicle fell.
Reported impact
The incident resulted in a vehicle plunging from approximately 230 meters. The police reported that the driver was following Google Maps directions that guided him onto the unfinished toll road.
Index analysis
According to detikJatim's investigation of Google Maps, the unfinished toll section in the Cerme to Manyar direction was not recommended by the system. Google Maps typically directed users to exit the Bunder Toll Gate first rather than traverse the unfinished section.
