Autonomous lawn mowers injure hedgehogs; nighttime ban called for

Autonomous lawn mowers equipped with sharp rotating blades cause severe and often fatal injuries to hedgehogs, which are nocturnal animals that do not flee when threatened. Animal protection organizations in Germany and Austria have called for nationwide nighttime operating bans, which some municipalities have already implemented.

What happened

Autonomous lawn mowers equipped with sharp, rapidly rotating blades cause severe injuries to hedgehogs that are active at night. When hedgehogs encounter or touch the mower, they roll into a ball or retract their head rather than fleeing, resulting in cutting wounds to the face, nose, and body.

The injuries frequently lead to severe infections that prove fatal to the animals. Jan Wolfmüller of Igelfreunde Rhein-Pfalz reported cases where injured hedgehogs sustained wounds so severe that their faces were split in two halves.

Twelve animal, nature, and species protection organizations have called for a nationwide nighttime operating ban on lawn mowers in Germany. Some German municipalities including Augsburg, Bayreuth, Cologne, and Leipzig have already imposed nighttime bans; Mainz enacted such a regulation in 2025.

Reported impact

Igelfreunde Rhein-Pfalz reports treating two to five injured hedgehogs annually, though notes a significant unreported dark figure of injuries. The Österreichischer Tierschutzverein treats many severely injured hedgehogs and amphibians from lawn mowers yearly.

Hedgehog populations in Germany have declined substantially as autonomous lawn mower use has increased over the past decade. The hedgehog is listed as potentially vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 2024 and has been placed on Germany's Red List of endangered species.

Index analysis

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals that lack a flight response when confronted with threats; they instead remain in place or curl into a protective ball. This behavioral trait makes them particularly vulnerable to operating autonomous mowers during nighttime hours.

The nighttime operating ban is described as a simple and effective measure to protect hedgehogs as a protected species and to preserve gardens and green spaces that serve as critical habitats.

Governance controls

The City of Mainz issued a general administrative order in 2025 implementing a nighttime ban on lawn mower use, citing the need to protect the legally protected hedgehog species and the decline in hedgehog populations coinciding with increased mower deployment.

The Deutscher Städtetag and multiple animal protection organizations have called for uniform nationwide regulations and demand that manufacturers be held more accountable.
