Apple Intelligence generates false news summaries in notifications
Apple's AI notification summarization feature generated multiple false news alerts, including claims that darts player Luke Littler had won a championship before the final occurred and that tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay. The BBC complained repeatedly from December through January before Apple committed to adding clarifications to identify AI-generated summaries.
What happened
Apple's AI notification summarization feature, Apple Intelligence, generated multiple false summaries of news app notifications. On January 2, the feature falsely claimed British darts player Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship before the final had occurred. Hours later, it falsely claimed tennis legend Rafael Nadal had come out as gay, apparently confusing an unrelated BBC story about Brazilian player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva.
In December, Apple Intelligence also generated a false headline suggesting Luigi Mangione had shot himself, when the BBC had published no such claim. In November, the feature created a false summary claiming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested.
Reported impact
The BBC complained to Apple in December and again raised the issue publicly after the January incidents, stating the problems had occurred multiple times. The BBC stated it was 'essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently' and emphasized that as 'the most trusted news media organisation in the world, it is crucial that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name'.
Index analysis
Apple Intelligence was released in October 2024 and became available in the U.K. in December. The feature was designed to summarize long or stacked notifications, but the AI system generated inaccurate summaries of news app content by hallucinating facts or conflating unrelated stories.
Governance controls
Apple initially declined to comment when the BBC first raised the issue in December. On Monday, January 6, Apple issued a statement saying it was 'working on an update to resolve the problem by clarifying when text being displayed in the notifications is the product of a summarization provided by Apple Intelligence.' The company encouraged users to report unexpected notification summaries and noted that Apple Intelligence features are in beta.
