Amazon Zoox Recalls 270 Robotaxis After Las Vegas Collision
Amazon's Zoox robotaxi service recalled 270 vehicles after a collision in Las Vegas on April 8, 2025, caused by a software defect that prevented the system from correctly predicting the movement of slowly approaching perpendicular vehicles. The company identified the issue, paused operations, and deployed a software fix that was released to all affected vehicles by April 17.
What happened
On April 8, 2025, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi collided with a passenger vehicle in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collision was attributed to a software glitch in which the vehicle failed to accurately predict when another vehicle was slowly approaching perpendicularly and stopping, leaving it unable to avoid a crash.
Zoox paused its fleet for several days following the incident. On April 10, the company confirmed through simulation and analysis that the issue could occur at speeds over 40 mph, and identified the root cause on April 11. An updated software version was released on April 16 and 17 to all impacted vehicles on public roads.
Reported impact
The NHTSA report does not link the software error to any injuries or additional accidents beyond the initial collision. Following the April 8 crash, Zoox immediately paused all driverless vehicle operations across the U.S. to conduct an internal review.
Index analysis
The recall affects 270 Zoox Sedan vehicles from the 2024 model year with automated driving systems, announced by NHTSA on May 5, 2025. This was not the first safety issue for Zoox's fleet; in April, NHTSA had previously recalled 258 Zoox vehicles due to a braking issue, with the regulator having scrutinized the operator on separate occasions in 2024 and 2023.
Governance controls
Following the crash investigation, the Zoox Safety Committee decided to conduct a voluntary and proactive safety recall for affected 2024 Zoox Sedans. The company identified and fixed the software defect and all Zoox vehicles on the road today have the updated software.
