AI-Generated Voice of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Remaster
The French voice of Lara Croft in a remastered Tomb Raider game was reportedly created using AI voice cloning technology trained on original voice actor Françoise Cadol's voice, rather than using her performance. Cadol filed a cease-and-desist notice, and Aspyr announced it would remove the AI-generated content and restore original recordings.
What happened
The French voice of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, released in an update on 14 August 2025, was created using AI-generated voice cloning rather than the original voice actor's performance. Voice actor Françoise Cadol, who has voiced the character since 1996, reported the use of a voice clone trained on her voice in the French version.
Cadol filed a cease-and-desist notice with Aspyr after fans alerted her to the AI-generated content. According to Aspyr's statement, an external partner studio was responsible for the error. Aspyr stated it would remove all AI voiceover content and restore the original recordings.
Reported impact
Cadol told Le Parisien: 'My voice belongs to me. You have no right to do that.' Gamers noted the AI-generated voice sounded 'robotic' and 'lifeless,' lacking the warmth and believability of Cadol's original performance.
The incident has raised concerns within the voiceover community about AI threatening actors' jobs. Patrick Kuban, co-president of United Voice Artists, noted similar incidents have been reported globally, from Brazil to Taiwan.
Index analysis
The cloned voice in the French version resembled Cadol's voice only vaguely according to reports, with varying degrees of AI artifacts visible in online videos comparing the versions. The use of AI in other language versions, including Italian and Spanish, may also have affected voice actors.
Governance controls
Video game performers including those represented by SAG-AFTRA negotiated a new contract in summer 2025 that included protections against unauthorized AI use of actors' voices after an 11-month strike.
