AI-generated video of Netanyahu circulates amid misinformation claims
Suspected AI-generated videos of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu circulated online, reportedly appearing amid claims of his death or injury spread by Iranian state media. An American content creator identified visual anomalies suggesting AI generation, though no official verification of the videos' origin was recorded.
What happened
A video showing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu relaxing at a coffee shop circulated online, reportedly emerging after Iranian state media and social media accounts spread claims that Netanyahu had died or been injured.
American content creator Ryan Matta analyzed the video using Videoleap editing software and identified it as AI-generated, identifying anomalies including unnatural movement of coffee that did not spill, unclear coffee cup design, jump frames in Netanyahu's body movements, and the implausibility of Netanyahu being at a coffee shop during wartime rather than attending military briefings.
Netanyahu subsequently posted another video showing him greeting people at what appeared to be a tourist location, which online users also quickly accused of being AI-generated, citing a disappearing ring on Netanyahu's finger.
Reported impact
The videos contributed to misinformation during a period of tensions involving Israel and Iran, when false reports of Netanyahu's death or injury were already circulating.
