AI-Generated Sexual Content Fuels Gender-Based Exploitation in Indonesia
AI technology is being misused in Indonesia to create fake sexual content featuring women and children, with Indonesia ranked third globally for online child sexual exploitation. Gender scholars warn the technology is perpetuating systematic gender-based violence in digital spaces.
What happened
Perpetrators are using AI tools to manipulate photos and create fake sexual content featuring women and children in Indonesia. Methods include altering photos to make women appear unclothed and creating sexual videos with individuals' faces digitally inserted using photos taken from social media.
Reported impact
Women and children are the primary victims of visual exploitation through AI-generated sexual content. A 2024 report noted Indonesia ranks third globally in online child sexual exploitation cases, with 1,450,403 recorded cases, making it one of the countries with the largest number of online pornography cases.
Index analysis
Ratna Noviani, a gender scholar from Universitas Gadjah Mada, stated that AI has become a new tool for perpetuating systematic gender-based violence. Digital spaces presented as areas of 'freedom' have become sites for reproducing gender-based violence, including sexual violence targeting women, characterized as massive, anonymous, and difficult to stop.
Noviani highlighted a fundamental contradiction: while social media enables women to appear, speak, and build visibility, this visibility makes their bodies and images vulnerable to sexual violence. Liking, commenting, or sharing manipulated AI content can make individuals secondary perpetrators of the violence.
