AI-Generated "Mihăiță" Hoax Misleads Tens of Thousands on Facebook
A Facebook page disseminated an entirely AI-generated story about a fictional poor boy washing windshields in Bucharest, which accumulated tens of thousands of shares and likes before journalists identified it as a hoax. The page, which has been repeatedly rebranded since 2024, used AI image and text generation to create an emotionally manipulative narrative designed to deceive users.
What happened
A Facebook page called 'Viață de românaș' posted an emotionally manipulative story about a poor 14-year-old boy named 'Mihăiță' who washes windshields at an intersection in Bucharest to support his family. The image and text were entirely generated using AI—the image by an image generation model and the text by a language model similar to ChatGPT.
The post accumulated over 36,000 likes and 16,000 shares in less than 24 hours. Journalists and fact-checkers identified numerous AI artifacts in the image: deformed logos, unrealistic objects like a malformed squeegee stick, unreadable text on clothing, and a non-existent street sign. The intersection named in the post, 'Boulevard Unirii with Nerva Tracan,' does not exist in that configuration.
Reported impact
Tens of thousands of Romanian Facebook users were deceived by the post and shared emotionally manipulative content based on a fictional scenario. The page appeared to be using the hoax as part of a broader pattern of manipulation, having been renamed multiple times since its creation in 2024 under names including 'Descoperă sănătatea,' 'E F E M E R,' 'Pescuit și Vânătoare,' and 'Inimă deschisă.'
Index analysis
The post was deliberately constructed to trigger emotional responses using classic manipulative narrative elements: a struggling child, an exhausted father working as a security guard, obedient siblings, and colleagues rallying to help. The post ended with: 'Each traffic light has a story. And sometimes, it's worth stopping and listening.'
The page's history of rebranding suggests a potential coordinated digital manipulation campaign. Similar pages have been repurposed for political propaganda during election periods.
