AI-generated literary critiques submitted to Litera contest
Two book critiques submitted to Hungary's Litera literary portal's contest were generated wholly or partly by AI and initially went undetected for approximately one month. The portal removed the submissions after commenters identified characteristic AI writing patterns and Litera's staff confirmed the AI authorship on January 13, 2025.
What happened
Two submissions to the Litera literary portal's book critique contest were generated wholly or partly by artificial intelligence. One submission was 100% AI-generated and another approximately 45% AI-generated, both authored under pseudonyms Tőkés Barbara and Mahler Csaba.
The critiques were uploaded to the contest in December 2024 and posted to Litera's Facebook page on December 11. They analysed Kemény Zsófi's novel 'Nyelni'. Litera's leadership discovered the submissions were AI-generated only on Monday, January 13, 2025, after being flagged by commenters who noticed characteristic AI writing patterns.
Reported impact
Kemény Zsófi, whose novel was the subject of the AI-generated critiques, shared one of the submissions on her Facebook page, unaware it was AI-produced. Comments on the posts led to the discovery of the artificial generation.
Index analysis
The AI-generated critiques were among the first two submissions posted to the contest and contained superficial and often unintelligible sentence structures characteristic of AI output. Despite Litera's Facebook disclaimer that posted works had not undergone professional review, the submissions were not initially identified as AI-generated during the initial contest period of approximately one month.
Governance controls
Litera removed the two suspect submissions from the contest upon confirmation they were AI-generated. The portal stated it would publish details about the incident on its website, though the AI-generated submissions were not published on Litera's main website since only winning entries are shared there.
The submissions remained visible on Litera's social media with a label added reading 'EXCLUDED FROM CONTEST' but were not removed from the platform.
