AI-Generated Images of Hollywood Sign on Fire Spread on Social Media During LA Wildfires
AI-generated fake images of the Hollywood Sign on fire spread across social media during the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, despite the landmark being unaffected and at a safe distance from the Sunset Fire. The fabricated images, some bearing the watermark of X's Grok AI chatbot, spread misinformation that caused distress to residents who were actively evacuating from nearby areas.
What happened
As the Sunset Fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on January 8, 2025, social media users shared fabricated AI-generated images depicting the Hollywood Sign burning. Some images bore the watermark logo of X's AI chatbot Grok, while others showed signs of digital manipulation through unnatural lighting and different compression levels between the fire and background.
When Reuters prompted Grok to create images of the landmark on fire, it produced images similar to those circulating online. One social media post with a fabricated image included the caption: 'For all the evil within Hollywood, this is a sign from God he will not have it any longer.'
Reported impact
Social media users criticized the viral fake images for spreading harmful misinformation while residents in the area were evacuating. One person posted: 'Stop with the Bull---, people are losing everything. The Hollywood Sign on fire is a fake, stop reposting it.' Another wrote: 'We are all really raw and vulnerable right now and don't need fake images circulating.'
X added reader-suggested context disclaimers to such posts stating 'This is fake, the Hollywood sign is fine and not close to the current fire, which is under control.' Some posts on Meta's platforms featured added context from The Dispatch clarifying that images were fake.
Index analysis
Computer science professor James O'Brien of the University of California, Berkeley, identified that images with the Grok watermark were 'essentially labeled as being from a Generative AI.' In images without the watermark, unnatural lighting and differing compression levels between the fire and background indicated the fire was added through image-editing software or generative AI.
The Sunset Fire was centered above Hollywood Boulevard and would have needed to spread at least two miles and cross the 101 Freeway to reach the Hollywood Sign. Jeff Zarrinnam, chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, confirmed on January 9 that the landmark had not been affected and was 'secure,' with photographs by Reuters showing the sign intact with no nearby fire.
