AI-generated image misled South Korean police searching for escaped wolf
A 40-year-old man in South Korea created and distributed an AI-generated image of an escaped zoo wolf to mislead authorities searching for the animal. The fake photo prompted emergency alerts and redirected the search operation, though the wolf was eventually recaptured after nine days.
What happened
A 40-year-old man in South Korea created and distributed an AI-generated image purporting to show Neukgu, a wolf that escaped from O-World zoo in Daejeon on 8 April 2026. The fake photo, circulated hours after the escape, depicted the wolf trotting down a road intersection.
The image prompted Daejeon city government to issue an emergency text to residents warning of a wolf near the intersection, and authorities presented it during a press briefing. South Korean police arrested the man after reviewing security camera footage and his AI programme usage records.
Reported impact
The AI-generated image misled authorities searching for the wolf, prompting them to urgently relocate their search operation. Neukgu was finally caught near an expressway nine days after his escape on 17 April.

The man told police he created and shared the image 'for fun', though authorities did not specify whether he intentionally sent it to authorities or simply shared it online.
Governance controls
Authorities are investigating the man for disrupting government work by deception, an offence that carries up to five years in prison or a maximum fine of 10 million Korean won.
