AI-Generated 'First Day in Hell' Videos Spark Religious Outrage in Indonesia and Malaysia
AI-generated videos depicting people joking and bathing in lava within a stylized hell setting were uploaded to YouTube, drawing widespread condemnation from Muslim religious authorities in Indonesia and Malaysia who view the content as offensive to Islamic teachings on the afterlife.
What happened
Two AI-generated videos titled 'Hari Pertama di Neraka' (First Day in Hell) and 'Hari Kedua di Neraka' (Second Day in Hell) were uploaded to YouTube, depicting people in digitally-created hellish environments with flames and lava backgrounds.
In the videos, people wore casual clothing or tattered garments and made jokes about activities in hell, including someone stating 'Liburan dulu guys, nyobain mandi lava, ternyata seru juga, panasnya mantul' ('Let's vacation first guys, trying lava bath, turns out it's fun, the heat bounces') while appearing to bathe in lava.
Reported impact
The videos prompted widespread condemnation from the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) and Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), which stated the content was misleading and offensive to Islamic religious teachings.
MUI's head of research and development stated the content constituted religious defamation and a distortion of Islamic faith by trivializing the Islamic concept of hell and making light of divine punishment.
Index analysis
The incident reflects concerns about AI-generated synthetic media being used to create religiously offensive content that could undermine religious teachings by presenting sacred theological concepts as entertainment.
