AI-Generated Fake Suspect Image Disrupts Murder Investigation in Tongyeong
An AI-generated fake image of a murder suspect spread widely on South Korean social media during an ongoing investigation in Tongyeong, causing confusion and sparking xenophobic speculation about the suspect's nationality. Police clarified the image was neither official nor based on their investigation.
What happened
A 60-year-old woman was killed during a robbery in a rural house in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsangnam Province on 10 June. An intruder stabbed her while she slept; her husband discovered her body at 6:34 AM and called police.
Police analysed CCTV footage and identified the suspect as a man in his 30s to 40s, but after 20 days the perpetrator remained unapprehended. An AI-generated image purporting to show the suspect's face spread widely on social media platforms including Instagram, depicting a masked and hatted man with clearly visible facial features including eye expression, in contrast to the blurry original CCTV image.
Reported impact
The synthetic image caused confusion in the investigation and triggered unfounded speculation on social media. Users made unsubstantiated claims that the suspect appeared to be a foreign worker or of Central Asian origin, fueling xenophobic sentiment.
Police stated that the image circulating on social media was neither provided by nor acquired during the police investigation.
Index analysis
Experts warned that connecting an unidentified suspect to particular ethnic or national groups based on manipulated images posed serious risks, noting that the suspect's identity and nationality remained unknown.
