What happened

Celina Euchner, a journalist for Tages-Anzeiger, was falsely portrayed in AI-generated fake news articles as being in a romantic relationship with German rapper Kontra K. Euchner had interviewed Kontra K in 2019, and an AI-driven website misinterpreted the photo caption 'Rapper Kontra K with People Editor Celina Euchner' as evidence of a romantic relationship.

The fabricated articles escalated to absurd claims, including statements that the couple had two children together in 2024, and another article claimed three children. The AI system also invented false professions for Euchner, describing her as a 'fitness influencer,' 'model,' or 'nutritionist.' The false articles circulated for months before Euchner was alerted to them by a friend in January.

Reported impact

Euchner's colleagues, friends, and family members began asking her about the supposed relationship after discovering the fake articles through Google searches. She expressed concern about the impact on her journalistic credibility. The Zurich-based journalist contacted the Federal Office of Cybersecurity (Bundesamt fΓΌr Cybersicherheit) to report the issue.

Index analysis

A professor of information and communication law at the University of Zurich confirmed that the fake articles violated personality rights, but noted that enforcement would be extremely difficult. He stated that Euchner would need to file hundreds of civil lawsuits to address all the websites publishing false information.
