AI-Generated Fake Expert Health Videos Mislead Elderly on YouTube
A South Korean government health institute found that 24% of the top 100 YouTube videos about elderly health in April 2026 featured AI-generated actors impersonating experts, spreading scientifically unsupported health claims to an audience of older users with limited digital literacy.
What happened
In April 2026, the Korea Health Promotion Development Institute analyzed the top 100 most-viewed 'elderly health' videos on YouTube and found 42 were created using generative AI.
Of those 42 AI-generated videos, 24 featured actors impersonating health experts to build credibility, while only 6 featured actual experts. Videos made false claims such as 'warm water is more effective than stomach medication' and 'frozen blueberries can cure diabetes.'
Reported impact
Elderly users in South Korea are highly exposed to these videos, with 97.2% of elderly people watching online broadcasts or videos as a main leisure activity and 45.4% of people in their 60s seeking health information at least once a week.
The Korea Health Promotion Development Institute noted that elderly people have relatively lower digital literacy and difficulty distinguishing false health information online.
Index analysis
The institute issued updated health information posting guidelines in December 2025 covering source verification, date and purpose confirmation, comparing diverse information sources, and critical evaluation.
