What happened

A video uploaded to YouTube channel 'Musk Chat' on 30 March 2025 showed Elon Musk criticising Taiwan's government for deporting Lau Chen-ya (亞亞), a Chinese influencer, saying the expulsion was 'digging its own grave'.

Taiwan's National Immigration Agency confirmed on 31 March 2025 that the video was fabricated. The video was created by re-editing footage of Musk from 5 November 2024 in which he discussed the US presidential election, then adding AI-generated audio.

International fact-checking organisation MyGoPen detected that Musk's facial features and lip movements had been altered using AI, and the voice had been synthetically generated.

Reported impact

The deepfake video circulated on the internet, with some social media users citing Musk's purported comments as evidence that he, described as influential in White House strategy, would shape US policy toward Taiwan.

Index analysis

The video was a deliberately manufactured piece of misinformation created by re-editing authentic footage and using AI-generated audio and facial alterations to falsely attribute statements to Musk about a politically sensitive matter in Taiwan.

Governance controls

Taiwan's National Immigration Agency publicly refuted the deepfake and warned that it was a maliciously fabricated impersonation of the person named.
