16-year-old dies by suicide after AI-generated sextortion blackmail
A 16-year-old Kentucky boy died by suicide after receiving an AI-generated nude image of himself in a sextortion extortion scheme demanding $3,000. The incident highlights the growing use of generative AI technology in blackmail scams targeting minors, with agencies reporting over 500,000 sextortion cases annually and at least 20 youth deaths since 2021.
What happened
Elijah Heacock, a 16-year-old from Glasgow, Kentucky, received a text message on February 28 containing an AI-generated nude image purporting to show himself, along with a demand for $3,000 to prevent the image from being shared with his family and friends.
Shortly after receiving the message, Elijah died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His parents discovered the threatening messages on his phone during the investigation into his death.
Reported impact
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) reported receiving more than 500,000 sextortion reports targeting minors in the past year, with more than 100,000 of those in the current year involving AI-generated images. The FBI estimates that at least 20 young people have taken their own lives due to sextortion scams since 2021.
Index analysis
Generative AI technology has made it easier for scammers to create fake nude images without needing to obtain actual photographs of victims. Dr. Rebecca Portnoff from Thorn, a nonprofit focused on preventing child exploitation, noted that no technical skills are required to access tools and resources for creating such illegal material through simple online searches.
Governance controls
Thorn has developed 'Safety By Design' principles outlining barriers that AI companies should implement during technology development to help reduce sextortion misuse. A handful of major AI companies have agreed to these campaign principles.
